![]() ![]() Many poems and song dedications, including "Ohio" by Neil Young followed this tragedy which brought an elevated sense of awareness to the American public and the world. He publicly acknowledged the last five words spoken by her as "Flowers are better than bullets," which became a well-known anti-war phrase and sentiment following this incident. Poem has taken eyewitness accounts, including that of Guardsman Meyers-(whom I've used as the "narrator" of this poem) who accepted Allison's lilac gift in his rifle barrel that morning and subsequently followed orders that he remove it. Poem relates to the 5/4/70 Kent State tragedy in which National Guardsmen were ordered to fire into a group of Vietnam War protestors, killing Allison Krause and three other students, and critically wounding several others.
